A global initiative to strengthen the protection of families through an international legal framework.
ENDORSE THE INITIATIVEWhile the family is recognized in numerous international and regional human rights instruments as a fundamental unit of society, no universal treaty currently provides a comprehensive framework addressing its rights, responsibilities and protection. The proposed Convention seeks to strengthen coherence, clarify existing principles, and promote greater protection and support for families and their members within the framework of international human rights law.
The Initiative is grounded in respect for the inherent dignity of every human person, the recognition of the family as a fundamental social institution, the protection of family life, the well-being and development of children, the responsibilities associated with family relationships, solidarity between generations, and appropriate social, economic and legal measures that enable families to flourish.
The proposed Convention addresses family life and unity, children's care and development, parental rights and responsibilities, family support, family reunification, and respect and care for older persons — building upon existing international human rights standards to create a coherent and comprehensive framework.

Families are recognized and protected in numerous international human rights instruments. However, no universal treaty currently provides a comprehensive framework addressing the rights of families and the responsibilities of States towards them.
Families are recognized in major international human rights instruments and global policy commitments.
Family-related rights are dispersed across multiple treaties, declarations and policy frameworks.
A dedicated Convention could consolidate principles, strengthen protection and promote greater coherence in international law and policy.
"The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society."
"The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State."
"The family is the fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members and particularly children."
The Initiative seeks to promote the development of an International Convention on the Rights of the Family, building upon existing international human rights standards and strengthening the protection and support afforded to families and their members.
